Honoring Dr. King

Dear Orange Friends,

Today, our nation recognizes the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King fought injustice, demanded change and persevered no matter how strong the headwinds. Much has changed in the world since the last time he visited Syracuse University in 1965. Still, Dr. King’s dream of racial equality remains out of reach for far too many. It is our obligation to continue his work with the same combination of love for humanity and determination to seek justice and equality for all.

At Syracuse University, we continue a 38-year tradition honoring Dr. King’s contributions to humanity with a communitywide celebration. This year’s event will be the first to be held in-person since 2020. It is fitting that our featured speaker embodies the heart and soul of the Syracuse community—Rev. Phil Turner. Rev. Turner is pastor of the Bethany Baptist Church in Syracuse, a community leader, civil rights advocate and longtime changemaker in many of the city’s most underserved neighborhoods. His inspired leadership is grounded in his faith, his passion for justice and his courage to defend what’s right.

I encourage our students, faculty and staff to join in this uniquely Orange celebration on Sunday, Jan. 22, at the JMA Wireless Dome. It will provide an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s hopeful vision, affirm our deep connection to the city of Syracuse and reinforce our commitment to truly being a University that is welcoming to all.

Sincerely,
Kent Syverud
