Dear Orange Friends:
Having been in Los Angeles this past week, I learned how to be a comedy straight man for Jeff Garlin of the sitcom The Goldbergs. Jeff is a professional and acutely funny comedian; he and the cast of The Goldbergs, together with their producer Doug Robinson, Syracuse Class of 1985, provided one funny highlight to a packed week of activities for Syracuse students in Los Angeles.
Syracuse has a wide and deep presence in Los Angeles. We have offices and classrooms in the city, as well as an impressive team of staff who are there to help students, applicants, parents, and alumni.
In addition to scores of students who spend a full semester in LA internships and taking classes we offer in the city, we send students to LA for intense week-long immersions in LA, including Art in LA for art students and Sorkin Week for drama students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts; and Sports in LA Week for students in sport management in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. All of these students came together Wednesday night at SONY Studios in Culver City for a comedy showcase featuring The Goldbergs, which included lots of professional advice for students, lots of laughs, and more than 100 of our alumni in Los Angeles, who connected with and networked for our students.
The evening, besides reminding your Chancellor not to take himself too seriously, taught me once again that we are blessed to have so many Syracuse friends and staff who will go the extra mile to help our students in LA and all over the world. I thank all of you who reach out to the best students anywhere—the ones who bleed orange.
