Supporting Our Community

Dear Orange Friends:

From the hurricane winds and torrential rains that have ravaged Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to the earthquake that has crumbled buildings in Mexico, we are seeing devastation that is difficult to comprehend.

This is taking both a physical and emotional toll on many Syracuse University alumni, family and friends who live on these islands and in central Mexico. Some of our students, faculty and staff are unable to contact loved ones. The emotional stress reaches across borders and affects us all.

I write to ask that each of us reach out in support of those in our community affected by Hurricane Maria, as well as by Irma and Harvey and the Mexican earthquake.

For students, faculty and staff needing assistance, I encourage you to contact:

-Students: Rebecca Reed Kantrowitz, Interim Senior Associate Vice President and Dean, Division of Enrollment and the Student Experience: 315.443.4424

-Faculty: LaVonda Reed, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs: 315.443.5525

-Staff: Andrew Gordon, Senior Vice President/Chief Human Resources Officer: 315.443.5459

If you are able to provide assistance, I encourage you to consider:

-Hendricks Chapel will serve as a drop-off point for those who wish to make a monetary donation to support all those affected by these recent natural disasters. Donations may be dropped off at the Dean’s Office on the lower level of Hendricks Chapel. The chapel may be reached at 315.443.2901.

-Donating to the American Red Cross, which is working to support victims of these recent natural disasters. Donations may be made online here.

-Donating to UNICEF USA, which is also working to support victims of each of these recent natural disasters. Donations may be made online here.

Many thanks for assisting our Orange friends with ties to the Caribbean and Mexico.

Sincerely,

Kent Syverud
