Dear Orange Friends,
Last week, for the first time in Syracuse University history, three of our students were selected to receive the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship in a single year. They are Cordiana Cozier ’23, a chemistry major in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S); Matthew Cufari ’23, a double major in physics in A&S and computer science in the College of Engineering and Computer Science; and Ellen Jorgensen ’23, a double major in Earth sciences in A&S and environment, sustainability and policy in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
The Goldwater Scholarships support exceptional college sophomores and juniors who will become this nation’s next generation of natural sciences, mathematics and engineering research leaders. All three of these students have big aspirations. All three make the Orange community proud.
They are just three representatives of the dynamic, curious and vibrant students who choose Syracuse University. They have been supported and inspired by Syracuse’s top-notch faculty, including Nancy Totah, Eric Coughlin and Tripti Bhattacharya. I thank their mentors, their advisors and the terrific team in our Center for Fellowship and Scholarship Advising. Together, these folks help our students identify, pursue and secure these prestigious national scholarships.
Please join me in congratulating Cordiana, Matthew and Ellen—our newest Goldwater Scholars. Today, and every day, they inspire their peers, their teachers and our university.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Kent Syverud
