FAQs

Syracuse University is launching a comprehensive search for a successor to Chancellor and President Kent Syverud, who will be stepping down from his role in June 2026. This marks a significant moment as the University prepares to welcome its 13th chancellor and president in its more than 150-year history.

The search committee is co-chaired by trustees Shelly Fisher ’80 and Lisa Fontenelli ’86. The committee includes faculty, staff, students, alumni and trustees, and is supported by Spencer Stuart, a global executive search firm.

The search committee is committed to a transparent, thoughtful and expansive process. Input from the Syracuse community will be sought through engagement sessions, surveys and direct feedback opportunities—both in person and virtually. To view the calendar of scheduled sessions, please click here.

Details on upcoming engagement sessions and opportunities to provide feedback are available on the Community Engagement page. Feedback, suggestions and nominations may also be submitted to the Chancellor Search inbox at SyracuseChancellor@SpencerStuart.com.

The search committee will be guided by input from the Syracuse community to identify the most important attributes, qualities and qualifications for our next chancellor and president. The ideal candidate will be an inspiring, innovative and strategic leader with a bold vision—someone who will honor Syracuse’s tradition of academic excellence and being welcoming to all and position the University for continued excellence and impact.

The search committee charged with identifying Syracuse University’s next chancellor has begun its work, with support from the executive search and leadership advisory firm Spencer Stuart. Following an extensive community engagement process, a position specification for the chancellor role will be finalized and shared in October.

In the months ahead, the search committee will work to develop a compelling and comprehensive candidate pool, interview a broad range of interested candidates and ultimately make a recommendation to the Syracuse University Board of Trustees, with the expectation of seating the next chancellor in July 2026.

Updates on the search will be posted regularly here and emailed to our campus community.
