Chimes

Dear Orange Friends:

Faculty, students, neighbors and our newest trustee, Patricia Mautino, gathered on the lawn around Crouse College one evening last week to listen to the chimes. Up in the bell tower, four student Chimemasters from the Setnor School of Music performed everything from Sibelius to “The Star-Spangled Banner” on a beautiful late spring day while we sat on lawn chairs and blankets and enjoyed the setting sun and the view of the “vale of Onondaga.” Only in Syracuse!

I also attended the Mirror Awards in New York last week. These awards, created by the Newhouse School, recognize the best work about the media by the media (hence “mirror”). Established in 2006, they are considered the most important awards that recognize excellence in media industry reporting. A broad range of media were represented among the award winners , and Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav was presented with the Fred Dressler Leadership Award (named after Syracuse alumnus Fred Dressler ’63) for his distinct, consistent and unique contribution to the public’s understanding of the media.

The Mirror Awards event showed the Newhouse School and Syracuse at their best. Many students and recent graduates helped our staff run a beautiful and flawless event for more than 600 media industry guests. Many faculty and alumni helped judge and celebrate extraordinary writing, broadcasting and digital work focused on the most important issues of the past year. And everyone seemed to enjoy both the effort and the result, which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for student scholarships. Thank you to all who made the 2014 Mirror Awards successful.
