Women’s Hockey Headed to NCAA Tournament

Dear Orange Friends,

On Saturday, the Syracuse women’s hockey team won the College Hockey America (CHA) league championship in front of a sold-out crowd at Tennity Ice Pavilion. For the first time ever, the Orange won both the regular season and CHA titles. This team is used to making history. In January, they won the program’s 200th game. Later this month they head to the NCAA tournament for the second time since the team’s inaugural season in 2008.

This success comes as the University celebrates 50 years of women’s athletics. The women’s hockey team is still relatively new, but it rounds out a strong women’s athletics program that includes nationally ranked teams in lacrosse, field hockey, rowing and cross country. Since the NCAA began sponsoring women’s athletics in the early 1980s, 68 Syracuse teams have earned invitations to NCAA tournaments.

I am especially proud that Syracuse University’s student-athletes are just as successful in the classroom. More than 250 female student-athletes are majoring in 77 fields from 10 different schools and colleges on campus. Syracuse student-athletes routinely have one of the highest graduation success rates in the nation. Many of our women’s sports programs boast 100% graduation rates, including women’s hockey. Our student-athletes work hard to balance their academic work with intense competition and practice schedules. This kind of success does not come easy.

Our women’s hockey team fills our community with Orange pride. Please join me in wishing them the best of luck in the NCAA tournament. Go Orange!

Sincerely,

Kent Syverud
